General Downhole Regulator Sub Now Available

The Regulator Sub from General Downhole is the world’s first downhole flow regulating tool. With a Regulator Sub in the tool string, no matter much extra fluid is pumped downhole, the flow rate below the tool is limited to a pre-set limit.

The Regulator Sub is already popular in the US and Canada and R&D Solutions is pleased to have now supplied one of these unique tools to an operator in Australia, specifically for its unique ability to prevent overspin of drilling motors.

About the Regulator Sub

The Regulator sub uses an industry-unique valve mechanism, which responds instantly to changes in fluid flow without the need to drop darts or pump balls. It provides a constant and consistent amount of flow to the mud motor, regardless of pump rate or torque load

The Regulator Sub is preset to limit flow to the mud motor to a fixed amount. Increasing the flow past the preset amount will result in the regulator tool opening so that excess flow is diverted to the annulus. As the motor experiences more torque, variable nozzles change size to ensure a consistent amount of flow is available to the motor and the bit. Drilling operations can proceed as normal with the motor always having the full amount of horsepower available, regardless of back pressure.

The Regulator Sub is shipped pre-configured in consideration of the anticipated flow rate.
